Research Ethics for Undergraduate Research Programs

September 17, 2013 – 2:00-3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)

Please join Julio Turrens (Division Director, At Large) and Representatives of the National Center for Professional and Research Ethics (NCPRE)  as they Discuss Research Ethics Instruction for Undergraduate Researchers

In the last decade, the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health have mandated instruction in the ethical and responsible conduct of research for all students supported on NSF research grants, including NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site programs.  The federal agency mandates have led to creation of research integrity training programs of varying quality and impact on campuses.  Academic institutional investments in ethics training have dramatically increased. This webinar will review evidence-based best practices in ethics education, and provide a forum of discussion as to how active learning techniques can be incorporated into undergraduate research ethics instruction.  CUR’s Director for the At-Large Division, Dr. Julio Turrens, a Professor and Associate Dean at University of South Alabama, will be joined by experts at the National Center for Professional and Research Ethics (NCPRE) at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. To help faculty and administrators provide instruction in research ethics, NSF supported the creation of Ethics CORE, the national online ethics resource center hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Presenters include:  Julio Turrens, Division Director, CUR At Large Division, and Associate Dean, College of Allied Health Professions, University of South Alabama, and C.K. Gunsalus and Michael Loui of NCPRE, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
