Deadline to Submit Abstracts to 2016 Pre-Conference Workshop at ISSOTL

All Day Event

Loyola Marymount University
Los Angeles, CA , 90045

This workshop is designed to facilitate dialogue between the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Undergraduate Research (UR) communities to explore how our two communities of practice can inform and enrich one another’s respective missions.  Brief presentations by presenters will play a key role in this symposium.  Presenters are invited to make brief (2-3 minute presentations) about undergraduate research, SoTL or the intersection between the two.  Presenters will be asked to provide a take-away handout or poster that will be shared on-line with workshop participants.

We are interested in presentations that align with the expected outcomes of the workshop:

  • A raised awareness of how SoTL practice can enhance the efficacy of UR programs
  • A raised awareness of how engaging UR collaborators can provide unique and critical insights to SoTL projects
  • The sharing and showcasing of effective practice in UR and SoTL
  • The facilitation of networks of faculty and students interested in the nexus between UR and SoTL
  • Practical advice for how participants can
    • improve the efficacy of UR programs on their home campuses;
    • infuse SoTL approaches in their work on their home campuses; and
    • engage undergraduates as co-inquirers in SoTL activities.

Call for Presentations

In Their Own Words presenters will be given the opportunity to present a key idea or share an example related to mentoring undergraduate research, SOTL, or the intersection between the two.  Presenters will have six to nine PowerPoint slides to present their key ideas.  The slideshow will be timed so each slide is shown for 20 seconds before advancing automatically – thus the entire presentation is only 2-3 minutes.  Only one author will make the presentation.

Each presenter is also expected to prepare a poster or a handout with key take away points to be uploaded to an on-line repository and shared with other workshop participants.  During the afternoon workshops on Using SoTL Approaches to Improve UR Programs and Infusing UR Students into SoTL projects, presenters will be expected to further share their ideas with other workshop participants.  Note:  there will be no posters on display during the workshop, but presenters are encouraged to bring copies of their poster or handout with them to the workshop.

To be considered for an In Their Own Words presentation, please submit a 250-350 word abstract by July 22, 2016 to  Submissions should include: Title, Author(s), Name of Institution, Abstract, and 3-5 Keywords.
