CUR President Janice DeCosmo on CUR's New Mission Statement

Dear CUR Members,

I am writing to share with you the news that the CUR Council recently adopted a new mission statement for CUR, with 93 percent of Councilors supporting CUR’s new mission statement:

The mission of the Council on Undergraduate Research is to support and promote high-quality mentored undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry.

The updated mission statement is intended to be more inclusive of CUR’s membership, constituencies, and disciplines. It does not signify a move away from our long-standing support of faculty research and mentorship but rather broadens the work to include other types of mentors—industry-based individuals, graduate students, postdoctoral associates, staff—and strengthens our commitment to inquiry across the disciplines.

You may have noticed that CUR’s strategic plan expires in 2019—just a few weeks away! The Executive Board is busy developing an updated plan, and we will be in touch with the Council and membership about some exciting new goals.

Many thanks to those of you who have proposed sessions for the CUR Biennial Conference this coming June. I look forward to hearing from you there and seeing you at CUR events throughout winter and spring. Thank you for all you do to advance undergraduate research on your campuses and through your membership in CUR. Please let us know how we are doing!

Happy holidays and best wishes for the New Year,

Janice DeCosmo
CUR President
