Undergraduate Research and Change in Higher Education: A Scholarly DiscussionPre-ISSOTL Symposium, Raleigh Convention Center, Raleigh, North Carolina

Developing a Comprehensive Undergraduate Research Program and Integrating Undergraduate Research into the Curriculum
Wednesday, October 2, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

The fourth Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) sponsored pre-ISSoTL International Symposium will take place on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013.  Undergraduate research, a topic of international interest, enriches student learning, enhances faculty productivity, and provides a host of other benefits to a campus (Clark et al., 2000; Noe et al., 2002; Lopatto, 2006; Johnson, 2007). Developing a comprehensive program, strengthening an existing program, and effectively integrating undergraduate research into the curriculum is challenging work. A successful integration of undergraduate research into curricula and campus programming requires support and participation from students, faculty, and administrators  and also requires sustainable structures, resources, and policies. Even effective programs often confront vexing issues linked to faculty workload, clearly defined roles within the undergraduate research enterprise, institutional valuing of undergraduate research, and student needs as apprentice scholars (Dickinson & Johnson, 2000; Fallow & Johnson, 2000; Johnson, 2002).

This symposium will focus on evidence-based practices that support the development and growth of comprehensive undergraduate research programs and curricula. Participants will work with colleagues from other institutions to craft practical strategies related to the following themes:

1. Connecting undergraduate research to the curriculum;

2. Mentor support and development;

3. Enhancing and evaluating student outcomes.

The program for the day will include brief keynote addresses, poster sessions around each of the three themes, and table discussions.  We will conclude with a discussion on how to foster international conversations on undergraduate research.
