The Council on Undergraduate Research CUR Fellows Awards honor deserving faculty and celebrate undergraduate research. These awards recognize CUR members who have demonstrated sustained excellence in research with undergraduates. In addition to achieving significant research results, a CUR Fellow also excels at helping undergraduates develop their research talents and skills. Recognizing that significant and meaningful research-related activities with undergraduate students can take many forms, the selection committee uses the following criteria for selecting awardees:
- active CUR membership
- sustained involvement of undergraduates in research
- publications with undergraduate co-authors in peer-reviewed journals
- extramural support for research
- presentations by undergraduates at regional or national meetings
- admission of students to postgraduate programs
- evidence of outreach to minority or under-represented groups
- incorporation of research activities and experiences into courses
With generous funding from an anonymous donor, the awardees receive $1,000.00, a plaque of recognition, and
present a general lecture on their research at CUR's National
Conference.
The first two CUR Fellows awards were presented at the CUR National Conference, June 22-24, 2000, College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio.
The first two CUR Fellow Awards went to Mary Allen, Wellesley College and Julio Ramirez, Davidson
College in 2000.
The second biennial CUR Fellow Awards were awarded in 2002 to Thomas Wenzel,
Bates College and Joseph Gallian, University of Minnesota, Duluth in
2002.
In April 2003 CUR received sponsorship from LI-COR
Biosciences for the 2004 CUR Fellows Award. The two
awardees for 2004 were Andrea Halpern, Bucknell University, and Jerry
Mohrig, Carleton College.
