INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND INQUIRY:
A SCHOLARLY DISCUSSION

Pre-ISSOTL Seminar, Liverpool, UK, 19 October 2010 0900-16:30

“Undergraduate research is now an international movement.” (Jenkins and Healey, 2010)

Aims:
The aims of this seminar are to:

  • Explore how undergraduate research and inquiry are conceived, delivered, supported and funded in a range of national systems;
  • Discuss and clarify what is common and distinctive about undergraduate research and inquiry in these national systems;
  • Identify key current developments in these national systems;
  • Explore department and institutional strategies for developing undergraduate research and inquiry including similarities and differences between research intensive and teaching intensive;
  • Assess what can be done to promote and support international sharing of good practice and research-based understanding of undergraduate research.

Format
A mixture of invited mini-presentations, discussions, and poster sessions are planned. Much of the discussion will take place in small international groups.

Posters
All delegates are invited to submit an electronic poster by 13 September 2010 to robin@cur.org for display on the seminar web site before the event. They should also bring a hard copy version with them (maximum size 2ft x 3ft) for display on the day. For technical specifications, please visit: http://www.cur.org/pre-ISSOTLposter.html. The Posters are a key aspect of the seminar and we hope that many attendees will produce a poster for the website and the Liverpool event.

Three types of poster are requsted:

  • Perspectives on practices and policies in undergraduate research and inquiry in specific national systems;
  • Perspectices on practices and policies in undergraduate reearch and inquiry in specific higher education institutions;
  • Conceptual and other posters which are relevant to the seminar aims.

Registration will be combined with ISSoTL 2010 registration (http://issotl10.indiana.edu/) which will open on 1 April 2010. Delegates may book for the seminar without going to the main ISSoTL conference. Early booking is advised. Seminar Fee $115 includes lunch, refreshments and opening ISSoTL event (registration closes 7 October). For delegates registering for the full ISSoTL conference at the same time the seminar fee is $75.
