This Week in Washington - May 29, 2017 Edition
The president's budget for fiscal year 2018 proposes major cuts to NASA, NIH, and NSF, as well as reductions in student aid and elimination of NEA and NEH.
On May 23, President Trump released his first full budget. The Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 budget proposal, “A New Foundation for American Greatness,” seeks roughly $3.6 trillion in federal spending cuts over the next 10 years, largely taking aim at programs that provide assistance to the poor, including cuts to Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), student assistance, and food aid. On a day dense with news, reports and commentary about the budget appeared below the fold.
This Week in Washington - May 22, 2017 Edition
Today the House Education and the Workforce Committee held a markup for the reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. The new bill, titled H.R. 2353, Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, is very similar to legislation passed unanimously by the committee and by a margin of 405-5 by the full House of Representatives last year.
On May 5th, President Donald Trump signed into law the final budget for FY 2017—more than seven months into the fiscal year the package funds. The deal is an Omnibus, an agreement that wraps together a number of appropriations bills, and ensures that federal operations will be supported through September 30. 2017.
