2005 Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships

The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) awards summer fellowships to the students of faculty members interested in mentoring an undergraduate student at primarily undergraduate institutions. CUR fellowships provide a unique opportunity for undergraduate students and their faculty mentors to engage in approximately ten weeks of full-time research at their home institution. Award opportunities may be restricted to certain academic areas, depending on available funding.

The Fellowships The Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Program provides opportunities for faculty mentors to support promising undergraduates. Established in the summer of 1990, the program facilitates a diversity of research opportunities that allow students at primarily undergraduate institutions to experience first-hand the excitement and challenges of careers in natural and social science, mathematics, and engineering.  Each fellowship provides funding for a student stipend and may provide additional support for travel, faculty honorarium, and equipment expenses.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Only one proposal per faculty mentor will be accepted.
  • Faculty mentor must not have been awarded a CUR summer fellowship in the previous year.
  • Faculty mentor must be an Individual CUR Member at the time the proposal is submitted.

Faculty Mentor

  • Quality and significance of research.
  • Track record of research productivity at the home institution and evidence that he/she has been active in developing a research program that involves undergraduates.
  • Appropriateness of the research in terms of the possibility of an undergraduate researcher making a significant contribution.
  • Development of the mentor’s research program and its potential to attract outside funding in support of future student investigators.
  • Publication record
  • Record in attracting external support (current funding sources of research must be provided).

Institution

  • Presence of facilities and equipment necessary to carry out the proposed research.
  • Impact of the project as it relates to the mission of the institution.
  • The institution must provide documentation of an Institutional Review Board or Human Subjects Committee review and approval for all projects requiring such certification.  Certification that federal guidelines for animal care are adhered to are also required for projects involving animals.

Special Considerations

  • Relationship of this proposal to the interests of a sponsor, including the impact on potential independent funding in the future.
  • Impact on diversity in the scientific workforce.
  • Faculty members at the beginning of their academic career with an interest in developing a research program that involves undergraduates.
  • Faculty members that are changing research directions and/or re-invigorating a research program after serving in an administrative capacity (e.g., Chair or Dean).
