Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mission of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR)?
The mission of the Council on Undergraduate Research is to support and promote high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship.

What is the definition of Undergraduate Research?
CUR defines Undergraduate Research as: An inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline.

What is the primary focus of CUR?
CUR believes that faculty members enhance their teaching and contribution to society by remaining active in research and by involving undergraduates in research. CUR’s leadership works with agencies and foundations to enhance research opportunities for faculty and students. CUR provides support for faculty development. Our publications and outreach activities are designed to share successful models and strategies for establishing and institutionalizing undergraduate research programs. We assist administrators and faculty members in improving and assessing the research environment at their institutions. CUR also provides information on the importance of undergraduate research to state legislatures, private foundations, government agencies, and the U.S. Congress. CUR welcomes faculty and administrators from all academic institutions.

Who can become a member of CUR?
CUR has three types of memberships.  Institutional memberships are available to institutions of any classification, from all across the world.  Discounts are available to institutions located outside of the United States, as well as to systems that join as a whole.  Individual memberships are available to individuals from all disciplines.  Discounts are available to retired individuals, students, Post Docs, five or more individuals from an institution joining or renewing with one payment, and individuals paying for two years dues at one time.  The third classification of membership is an Affiliate membership.  CUR Affiliates are other organizations that wish to support undergraduate research.  Most Affiliates are non-profit organizations, though any organization is welcome to join.  Please visit http://www.cur.org/membership.html for more information.
