Mar 25, 2017 PDF Document Spring 2017 CUR Quarterly: Undergraduate Learning from the Ground Up: Linking Belowground and Aboveground Diversity in Costa Rica - CUR Quarterly
Through an NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates grant, 24 undergraduates (more than half from underrepresented demographic groups) addressed ecological and natural resource management questions within the Maquenque National Wildlife Refuge between 2013 and 2015. Students worked with faculty mentors and researched vegetation, invertebrates, primates, soil microbial community structures, or soil biogeochemical characteristics within undamaged, damaged, or at-risk habitats.

This article discusses a project that accomplished the aims of the Association of American Colleges & Universities “global learning” criteria, involving interdisciplinary study, external engagement through documentary production and photography, and cultural sharing.

Research abroad programs for undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics provide high-impact learning experiences, but little has been done to assess the scientific and cultural gains of participants. This article compares the learning gains of 10 students who participated as a group conducting research in the Czech Republic with the learning gains of 10 solo students who participated in research abroad and 117 students who participated in research at U-Arizona.
