Council on Undergraduate Research Elects New Executive Board Member

Newswise — Washington, D.C. - Today, the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) announced the results of its 2017 election for Executive Board General Representative. Karen Havholm, Professor of Geology, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Sponsored Programs and Director of the Center of Excellence for Faculty and Undergraduate Student Research Collaboration at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, will begin her term in June, at the close of the 2016 CUR Annual Business Meeting.

Havholm has been part of the CUR community for more than two decades, during this time she has been dedicated to personifying the mission of the organization. Her prior contributions to CUR’s governance and her years of dedication to the undergraduate research community signify that she is well-prepared to serve on the Executive Board. Havholm has served the organization in two different divisions, as a conference co-chair, author, reviewer, professional development consultant, and committee member. As Elizabeth Ambos, Executive Officer notes: “Karen Havholm has contributed her considerable talents to a range of CUR initiatives, including finance review, both CUR and NCUR conference support, and professional development consultancies. Her multi-divisional experience means she has an unusually broad knowledge of the CUR members’ needs, making her an ideal General Board representative.”

Add to that the work she has done on her own campus and for the University of Wisconsin System,and the undergraduate research community will benefit greatly from her continued leadership. To enhance undergraduate research opportunities and collaboration across the UW System Havholm helped launch the Wisconsin System Council on Undergraduate Research (WiSCUR). This state-wide program is the result of Dr. Havholm's leadership in the NSF-funded CUR Systems and Consortia project, which worked to improve the quality of undergraduate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education at higher education systems and consortia. On the UW-Eau Claire campus, Havholm has expanded the diversity of students involved in funded apprentice-model research, supported students in research abroad, and worked collaboratively to create professional development support for faculty research mentors. Excited by the news Dr. Havholm stated, “I have been associated with CUR for over 20 years in two different divisions. I look forward to working with the talented people on the Executive Board who provide strategic direction to the organization.”
