Cancellation Policy

In general the cancellation deadline is thirty days prior to the start of the conference, except where explicitly noted.  Cancellations requests received in writing to the CUR National Office at cur@cur.org prior to the cancellation deadline will receive a full refund less a $50.00 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given after the cancellation deadline. Transfer of registration to another individual before the cancellation deadline is free of charge, but subject to member classification charges due to differences in conference rates. Transfer of registration after the cancellation deadline will be charged a $50.00 transfer fee.

Institutions may not substitute one participant for another without prior approval of the National Office.

CUR always suggests that their registrants purchase low-cost travel insurance when booking their air reservations. Not only will this insurance cover your airfare in the event of cancellation but will also cover the registration cost for the meeting you were to attend.

The experiences I had as recipient of an NSERC undergraduate summer research award at the University of Manitoba and as a graduate student mentoring undergraduates at McMaster University were formative in my career development and ultimately led to my involvement with the Council on Undergraduate Research.  So, I am thrilled CUR is hosting its first institute at a Canadian institution this fall. 

At this ISURP institute, attendees will work closely with CUR facilitators, engage in dialogue with colleagues from other institutions, and learn from plenary sessions. Whether you are developing a new program, or you wish to move from an individualized to centralized UR program, attendees are assured to come away from the institute with an action plan for moving forward that is tailored to your own institutional context.”

This institute is designed for campuses that are establishing new undergraduate research programs or centralized undergraduate research offices and those expanding undergraduate research opportunities from a single department to a campus-wide program.  It is also valuable for campuses interested in serving new student constituencies (e.g., community college, underrepresented students, first- and second-year students, graduate students as mentors) and engaging faculty from disciplines new to undergraduate research (e.g., arts and humanities). The institute will provide participants with the opportunity to develop a strategic implementation plan through sessions on: (1) the nuts and bolts of developing an office (budgets, staffing, and programming); (2) identifying and working with campus partners and collaborators; (3) funding models, including undergraduate research as a Broader Impacts activity; and (4) assessment and evaluation. CUR’s Characteristics of Excellence in Undergraduate Research (COEUR) and other materials will be used to help campuses do a self-evaluation and develop a strategic plan and short- and long-term goals after post-institute. We encourage campuses to send teams charged with development and implementation—this may include administrators, undergraduate research program directors, key faculty members, and individuals from related units such as undergraduate education, honors programs, academic success and retention programs, librarians, sponsored research programs, etc.   We encourage applications from those that run programs on a full- and/or part-time basis as well as from committees that might have this responsibility on their campus. We will share models from all types of institutions; PUI, regional comprehensive, community colleges, and Research I institutions. 

This institute has the following goals: 

        To provide models of effective academic-year and summer UR Programs.

        To share models of the integration of UR into the curriculum.

        To equip UR Program directors and committees with a "tool-kit" of essential items needed for running an undergraduate research center or program, including models of responsible conduct of research education.

        To provide attendees with information they can use on resources needed (staffing and other resources) to establish a new program

        To provide access to resources that are available for continuous growth and development of a campus undergraduate research program, including faculty development and undergraduate and graduate student training to be effective mentees and mentors.

        To provide UR Program Directors with "mentors" who are willing to provide advice after the institute ends. Mentors will be from a wide range of institution types.

        To begin a network that will extend beyond the dates of the workshops

        To share a variety of campus models and program components that include broad disciplinary scope and focus, and work with students at different stages of their academic careers

As a part of the institute application the lead member of the team or attendee will be asked to provide a one-paragraph narrative statement. This statement may describe any information deemed relevant to assist in the selection process. In particular, please include the following:

        A description of the current scope and environment for undergraduate research on your campus as well as the desired future of undergraduate research at your institution over the next five years.

        What outcomes your team/your campus hopes to realize through participation in the CUR Institute.

        A listing of team members and description of their role on campus vis a vis undergraduate research and program development.

A $50.00 application fee is due at the time of application. Should your institution be accepted to attend the institute, the application fee will be applied to your tuition fees. In the event that CUR does not accept your application, the $50.00 application fee will be refunded. Should your campus withdraw your application or elect not to participate in the institute, the $50.00 application fee will be forfeited.

Upon notification of acceptance, CUR will invoice your institution for the amount of $675 per accepted participant (CUR Enhanced Members), $750 (CUR Institutional Members), $825 (CUR Individual Members) or $925 (Non-CUR Institutional Members). If you are not sure whether your school is a member, please refer to the list of Enhanced and institutional members by clicking here or contact CUR's Membership Department. A $50.00 credit will appear on the invoice for any application fees received. The registration fee includes all sessions, materials, and meals (Thursday evening through Saturday afternoon). 

All tuition fees are due 30 calendar days prior to the start of the institute. To guarantee that a place is held, payment for the institute must be received in the National Office by this date, unless prior arrangements are made with the National Office. Participants that have not paid may be dropped from registration. In the event that a participant is dropped from registration, the application fee will not be refunded.

Should your team need to cancel or any individual member of the team cancel, the National Office must receive written notice of the cancellation 30 calendar days prior to the start of the institute.  In the event of a cancellation application fees will not be refunded. Cancellations received before the cancellation date will not be held responsible for registration fees, however the application fee will not be refunded.  Participants canceling after this date will be responsible for the full fee.
