(Thursday, June 20,2002; 9:45-10:30 am)
Name of Workshop Leader: Joyce Miller Iutcovich, Ph.D.
Name of Recorder: Joyce M. Iutcovich
Summary:
After brief introductions, the workshop leader began the overview of peer review, which included the following points:
-
The functions of and expectations of peer review;
-
The challenges associated with peer review
-
The ethical dimensions of peer review
The PowerPoint presentation for this workshop is attached, which provides an outline of the key discussion points.
The participants engaged in dialogue throughout the presentation, as each was experienced in the peer review process. Participants contributed valuable insights about the peer review process and the challenges associated with it.
There was only time for discussion of one of the cases included in the PowerPoint presentation-the 3rd case. The group decided in this case that it was best for the editor to recuse him/herself from offering a recommendation as related to a rank and tenure case where the editor had confidential information about the peer review of a manuscript for that person.
