Summary

This workshop focused on key issues related to publishing with undergraduates in peer-reviewed journals.  The workshop covered both discipline-specific and interdisciplinary issues, primarily from the perspectives of the sciences (Osborn), the social sciences (Paul), and the humanities (Glowka).  Some of the salient topics covered included the following:

            • The pedagogical value of student publication (i.e., for the students),

            • The professional benefits of mentoring student projects that result in publication (i.e., for the faculty),

            • The institutional benefits of student publication,

            • Research (and publication) as a solitary vs. collaborative enterprise,

            • When student authorship is warranted,

            • Order of authorship,

            • Publishing the work of a single vs. multiple students,

            • Manuscript preparation and revision,

            • Journal selection, and

            • Editorial communication.
