How to Get Started in Research with Undergraduates, Session VI

Speakers: Merle Schuh & Michael Castellani
Recorder: Michael Castellani
Attendance: 34 (including 2 graduate students and 4 new faculty)

The session began by showing the attendees a copy of "How to Get Started in Research".

During the presentation, the audience made the following observations. - the website available during the conference for searching granting agencies - one attendee pointed out that the faculty union on his campus distributed grants to faculty (typically 7 - 20K). The university supplied the money. - faculty should ask for reassigned time from their deans for grant writing - faculty should request part of indirect costs be returned to them (if that is not already their university's policy) - include maintenance in equipment grants.

A handout was provided summarizing the presentation and that handout is available online at http://www.chm.davidson.edu/meschuh/CUR.pdf  Additions based on the comments listed above will be put into an updated handout for posting on the web.
