The
Undergraduate Research Summer Fellowship Program of the Council on Undergraduate Research
provides support for a seminal experience in the life of an undergraduate
natural or social science,
mathematics, or engineering student. Our
fellowships provide ten weeks of research with a faculty mentor on the student’s home
campus. The student and mentor apply jointly. Research projects are conducted during the summer
between the junior and senior years. Our
fellowships currently provide a student stipend of $3,000 - $3,500 and $500 for supplies and materials. Some awards also provide up to $500 in travel funds
for the student to present a poster or a talk at a scientific meeting and a $500 stipend for
the faculty member who serves as mentor. CUR has
established an endowment fund named after our founder, Brian Andreen, to support these
fellowships. In addition, we accept contributions
from individuals and corporate and government sponsors for current-year support.
Individual
contributions either to the Andreen Endowment Fund or directly to
the Summer Fellowship Program (to be spent in the current year) are
welcome. Many donors choose to recognize
their own mentor by making the donation in his or her honor. Students are told about the individual scientists in whose name money has been
contributed to their fellowship.
We
as educators and scientific researchers are very much aware of the transformational nature of
the undergraduate research experience, especially for students who would otherwise have to
work at a job unrelated to their science education. We
believe that many of the talented students who receive CUR undergraduate research fellowships
would not pursue successful careers in science without this opportunity at this critical stage
in their young careers. This may be especially
true for students who come from backgrounds without peer or adult role models in scientific
endeavors, and who have to support themselves during their college years.
The
Council on Undergraduate Research is a 501(C) 3 nonprofit educational association supported by
the dues of academic institutions, faculty members, and administrators. Our mission is to promote research by undergraduate
students with faculty mentors in all settings of science, mathematics, and engineering
education. We believe that education is best served by faculty-student collaborative
research combined with investigative teaching strategies.
CUR provides avenues for faculty development and helps administrators to improve the
research environments of their institutions. Gifts
to CUR to support the Undergraduate Research Summer Fellowships Program are tax-deductible.
