Merlyn (Merle) D. Schuh is the James G. Martin Professor of Chemistry at Davidson College.  He received a B. A. degree in Chemistry from the University of South Dakota (1967) and a Ph. D. degree in Physical Chemistry from Indiana University (1971).  He taught for 3.5 years at Middlebury College and since 1975 has been on the faculty at Davidson, where he served as chemistry department chair for eight years (1988-96).  He has done sabbatical-year research at Syracuse U. and at the U. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He believes strongly in the importance of research as a part of the undergraduate chemistry curriculum and has supervised the research of 89 undergraduate students.  His research has been supported by over thirty research grants from agencies such as NSF, NIH, PRF, Research Corporation and the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation.  His present research interests are in: 1) the use of fluorescence, phosphorescence and circular dichroism to study the folding and unfolding of globular proteins induced by solvent changes and 2) the development of molecular thermometers and oxygen sensors.  Over a third of his research students have co-authored publications with him.  He has been a frequent reviewer of grant proposals to PRF and NSF, has refereed manuscripts for chemistry journals, and has written and edited questions for use in the GRE test in chemistry.  He was selected as a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Scholar/Fellow awardee during 1993-94.  He was the recipient of the Distinguished Chemist Award for 1998 given by the North Carolina Institute of Chemists.
