The CUR Quarterly serves as the official
public “voice” of CUR to both its members and to a broader
community. Its purpose is to provide useful and inspiring information
about undergraduate research and research at primarily undergraduate
institutions. The primary
goal and function is to advance the mission of CUR.
To this end, the operation and editorial policies of the CUR
Quarterly should be flexible so that its content and deadlines meet the
immediate needs of the communities that it serves.
EDITORIAL AND PRODUCTION STAFF
The CUR Quarterly will be prepared for
publication by the Editor-in-Chief (EIC), Issue Editors (IEs),
Divisional Editors (DEs), and News and Features Editors (NE).
These individuals will work in close collaboration with the
Executive Officer during the production phase.
EDITORIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Editor-in-Chief
The Editor-in-Chief has broad authority
to work on behalf of CUR to solicit, schedule and edit materials that
promote the mission of CUR. The
EIC must work with the President and NEO to produce the best possible
magazine that serves the evolving needs of CUR as determined by the
President and NEO, who will consult as needed with the CUR Publications
Committee and the Executive Board.
The EIC has responsibility to work with
the appropriate IE to develop the articles related to the theme of each
issue. The EIC handles all
aspects of articles that are submitted for publication in the Quarterly
that are not related to an issue theme.
Non-theme articles are reviewed prior to acceptance for
publication. Usually these
reviews are to be conducted by at least three individuals, although the
EIC has the discretion to circumvent the review process for
time-sensitive submissions or under other unusual circumstances.
The EIC forwards the reviews to the author and provides a
decision about whether submission of a revised version is appropriate.
Depending on the extent of revisions required, the revised
version may be sent out for review.
The EIC also manages any regular features
that appear in the Quarterly (e.g., Undergraduate Research Highlights,
Institutional Highlights) and works with the NE to judge the suitability
of news features. The
EIC has final copy-editing authority over any non-theme articles,
regular features, and news items. The
EIC has final authority over judging whether articles are acceptable for
publication. Authors of rejected articles can appeal the decision to the
President and NEO of CUR.
The EIC can write an editorial piece for
each issue.
The EIC must submit all materials for an
issue to the National Office at least a month prior to the publication
date (i.e., February 1 for the March issue).
Issue Editor
Each Issue Editor has responsibility for
the thematic component of two issues a year.
The IE usually writes an editorial piece to accompany the theme,
although the content of the editorial can vary from the theme.
The IE works with the EIC on those articles related to the theme.
The IE and EIC discuss the theme for an upcoming issue and decide
the nature of the articles they would like to support the theme.
The IE and EIC then collaboratively construct a call for
articles, decide who to invite to contribute articles for the theme, and
provide the authors with specific guidance on the length and content of
the articles.
The IE and EIC review all articles
related to the theme, and the IE provides those reviews to the authors.
If the EIC judges that the revisions requested through the
reviews are minor in scope, the IE has authority to judge the
suitability of the revisions and accept the paper.
If the EIC judges that the revisions are significant in scope,
the IE and EIC consult on whether the revised form is acceptable for
publication. In the event that an article solicited for the theme is
deemed unacceptable for publication, the EIC will inform the
corresponding author of this decision.
The IE then copy edits each article
related to the theme, ensures that the authors are agreeable to the
final copy-edited form, and provides the copy edited versions along with
any photographs to the National Office.
All theme articles must be in to the
National Office at least a month prior to the publication date (i.e.,
February 1 for the March issue).
Division Editor
DEs help to identify authors and solicit
articles for the Quarterly. These
may be articles related to issue themes, running themes or general
interest pieces that relate to the mission of CUR.
In the case of articles related to an issue theme, the IE and EIC
are the only ones who can invite a submission, so the DE must
communicate the suitability of an author to either the IE or EIC in a
timely manner.
DEs can develop running themes on topics
that would be of particular interest to members of their Division. Before beginning a running theme, the DE should discuss the
suitability of the topic with the EIC and together they plan the general
length and scope of the theme.
DEs help identify newsworthy items for
inclusion in the CUR Quarterly and bring these to the attention of the
EIC and NE. DEs help
identify contributors to regular features in the CUR Quarterly and bring
these to the attention of the EIC.
DEs are often responsible for reviewing
non-theme articles that are submitted for publication in the CUR
Quarterly.
DEs will occasionally be asked to write
articles for themes in which a disciplinary focus is desirable.
News and Features Editor
The News and Features Editor works in
consultation with the EIC to develop newsworthy items for the CUR
Quarterly. The amount of
news that is reported will vary from issue to issue.
News items can range from brief reports to extended articles. The NE should work to identify particular events (e.g.,
national awards that may go to people at undergraduate institutions) to
publicize each year.
The
EIC has final authority to decide whether to include a news item in the
CUR Quarterly.
All news items must be in to the
Editor-in-Chief at least six weeks prior to the publication date (i.e.,
January 15 for the March issue).
APPOINTMENT OF EDITORS
The CUR Quarterly Editor-in-Chief, Issue
Editors, and News Editor, will be appointed by the President with the
approval of the Executive Board, typically for a three-year term.
The search for a new EIC is normally conducted by the
Publications Committee, which makes a recommendation to the President.
The search for a new Issue Editor or News Editor is normally
conducted by the Editor-in-Chief, often in consultation with the
Publications Committee, who makes a recommendation to the President. Division
Editors are appointed by the Chair of the Division, and term lengths are
variable depending on the practices and interests of the Divisions.
POLICIES
Each CUR Quarterly will include
information about CUR and its events and programs deemed necessary by
the CUR President and NEO and will provide the CUR President and NEO
with appropriate space for messages from them.
The NO (under the direction of the NEO)
has the responsibility to arrange for the production/publishing/printing
of each article, for contracting for those services, and for determining
the print run size and providing the mailing list.
SUBMISSION OF ARTICLES
All articles should be submitted
electronically to the Editor-in-Chief.
Articles related to an issue theme should be submitted to the EIC
and appropriate Issue Editor. All
regularly scheduled columns and letters to the Editor should be
submitted to the EIC in a timely fashion. |
