Naturally Obsessed gives a highly dramatic view of life in a molecular biology lab, following three graduate students and their mentor for over three years. The film documents their acculturation into science, the emotional ups and downs of research, and finally, their discovery of the molecular mechanism of the AMPK protein -- a hot target because of its potential for treatment of type two diabetes and obesity. The film was directed by Dr. Richard Rifkind, Chairman Emeritus of the Sloan-Kettering Institute, who with his wife, Carole, “wanted to make science more transparent and build deeper public appreciation for the doing of science.”
